Underwater Noise: Ports Engagement & Opportunities
Justin Eickmeier & Danielle Butsick (Port of Seattle Environment and Sustainability) | Wednesday, June 11 at 10:30 AM CDT
The Port of Seattle has initiated an underwater noise assessment program facilitated by SLR Consulting to establish a two-year baseline of underwater noise levels in the waters in and around Elliott Bay. This initiative aims to understand the ambient soundscape and assess the relative impact of Port-related underwater noise sources, including commercial vessels and marine construction activities, on the local marine environment.
Two cabled hydrophone stations will be strategically placed to collect underwater noise data continuously. These hydrophones will capture a wide range of acoustic information, which will be analyzed alongside Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder data from commercial vessels. This integration allows for precise correlation between vessel activities and noise levels. Weather and tidal data from the region will be incorporated into the analysis to account for environmental variables that may influence underwater noise.
The comprehensive data collection over the two-year period will provide a robust baseline of underwater noise conditions in Elliott Bay. Once this baseline is established, the program will establish targets for reducing underwater noise pollution using strategies in the Port's Underwater Noise Mitigation and Management Plan. The Port will use long-term monitoring data to adapt its strategies to improve underwater noise reduction outcomes.
This program underscores the Port of Seattle’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable maritime operations. It seeks to balance economic activities with the preservation of marine habitats. The findings and subsequent monitoring and adaptive mitigation efforts will contribute to the broader understanding and management of underwater noise pollution in busy port areas.
